MDUSBC QUEENS

 

Michelle Sterbenz of Brownstown Township won the Metro Detroit USBC Association Queens on Sunday with a 247-192 triumph over defending champion Novella Daniels of Harper Woods at Van Dyke Bowl in Sterling Heights .

 

Sterbenz qualified 13th with a six-game total of 1,292 on games of 234-205-243-222-202-186. In match play she defeated Jennifer Churchill of Windsor 278-257, Nancy Dietrich of Clinton Township 245-186 and Jennifer Bator of Eastpointe 234-231 en route to the championship match.

 

Daniels qualified second with 1,393 on games of 205-290-194-232-247-225. She beat Rene Smith of Macomb 205-172, Kathleen Bishop of Westland 237-170 and Nicole Idziak-Owsley of Washington 258-180 in her quest to repeat.

 

Michelle Ewald of Clinton Township , 2006 MDUSBC Queens champion, was the top qualifier with 1,424 including games of 245-252-279-216-217-215.

 

Rene Smith matched Daniels with 290 for the high game of the tournament.

 

Sterbenz took home the top check of $1,000 plus a tiara pendent necklace and matching ear rings compliments of Chinn Jewelry. Daniels settled for $500.

 

The only Oakland County cashers were Shaun Damron of Waterford Township for $50 and Kolleen Kernohan of New Hudson for $50.

OLD TIMERS TOURNAMENT RESULTS

 

The 78th Annual Old Timers tournament was held at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

 

The overall champion of the event was James Stockton of St. Clair Shores with 798 on games of 299, 265 and 234.

 

In the under 50 category Mark Minda of Clinton Township was tops with 783, followed by Dan Pokropowicz of Clinton Township with 731 and Garrett Nagle of Westland 724.

 

Robert Slayden Jr. of Taylor paced the 50-59 age group with 762. Second and third were James Millen Jr. of Redford (747) and Mark Abele of Garden City (739) respectively.

 

In the 60-64 division Nazree Browning Jr. of Allen Park shot 747 to lead, followed by Clarence Davis of Detroit with 736 including a 300 game and Eugene Szweda of Southgate with 717.

 

Leonard Cianciolo of Warren was tops in the 65-69 category with 736. Charles Orbecky of Taylor had 718 and William Dewid of Warren 697 to finish second and third.

 

Howell’s Richard Cory paced the 70-74 age group with 689, followed by Sam Lopiccolo of St. Clair Shores with 677 and Thomas Edwards Jr. of St. Clair Shores with 665.

 

In the 75-79 group Don Braun of Warren won with 698. Lloyd McNabb of Warren with 678 and Robert Slayden Sr. of Taylor with 665 followed.

 

In the 80 and over group Gene Rice of Shelby Township was the leader with 672. Milton Patten of River Rouge had 657 and William Kandilian of Farmington Hills with 652 finished second and third.

 

The tournament drew 570 bowlers with bowlers coming from Buffalo , Minneapolis , Colorado , Idaho , Pennsylvania , Indiana and Canada .

 

For those men at least 40 years of age and bowling for at least 25 years mark your calendar for the 2009 edition on Saturday, Nov. 28 and plan to be there.
