MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

 

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters tournament qualifying and first rounds of match play wrapped up at Mayflower Lanes in Redford Sunday, Feb. 10.

 

David Bernhardt Sr. of Bruce, James Burton of Novi, Harold Sullins of Chesterfield and Larry Walker of Garden City remained undefeated in the double elimination format.

 

Bernhardt qualified eighth with a six-game total of 1,404. In match play he remained undefeated with wins over Edward Dudek of Livonia 437-407, Ronald Burgess of Plymouth 502-469 and top qualifier John Ruggiero III of Belleville 456-433 in the two-game matches in the double elimination format.

 

Burton stayed alive with victories over Terrence Kandes of New Boston 448-439, James Lauricella of Sterling Heights 482-450 and John Masiello of Southgate 495-443. He qualified fourth with 1,438.

 

Sullins qualified second with 1,487 and beat George (Mike) Lee of Dearborn Heights 417-318, Jimmy Magolan of Sterling Heights 525-493 and Daniel Mytty of Livonia 457-436.

 

Walker beat Roderick Bryant of Oak Park 482-409, 2006 Senior Masters Champion Edwin Austreng of Waterford Township 468-457 and Charles Novak of New Baltimore 508-408 after qualifying 19th with 1,370.

 

Alive in the loser’s bracket are Charles Novak, Roderick Bryant, George Humphry of Grosse Pointe Farms and John Ruggiero III.

 

Top qualifier Ruggiero bowled 1,488 on games of 246, 256, 257, 227, 257 and 246. He edged Sullins by one pin in qualifying.

 

In match play Terry Hockstad of Utica and Michael Lucente of Warren recorded 300 games.

 

The 160-player field averaged 208.9, with the top 32 finalists averaging 231.2.

 

The final rounds of match play begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Mayflower Lanes.

 

Oakland County cashers include Mitchell Jabczenski Sr. of Novi for $250, Edwin Austreng of Waterford Township $225, Anthony Dadeppo of Troy $225, Daniel Mayer Jr. of Waterford Township $200, defending champion Lee Snow of Wixom $200, Steven Kazimierczuk of Waterford Township $100, John Bennett of Clarkston $90, Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township $80, Jeffrey Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills $80, Leonard Kersten of Clarkston $80, Ervin Watson of South Lyon $80, Kenneth Harp of Highland $80, Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon $80, Thomas Tubbs Sr of Waterford Township $80 and Oliver Mabry of West Bloomfield $80.

 

Ernest Segura Sr. of Brownstown won the Super Senior competition for bowlers 60 years of age and older who didn’t finish in the top 32. He defeated Nick Beelaard of Windsor 256-195 for the victory.
