The Metro Detroit USBC Association Masters tournament qualifying and first rounds of match play wrapped up at Cloverlanes in Livonia Sunday, Jan. 20.

 

David Ewald of Macomb was the top qualifier with a six-game total of 1,329 on games of 174, 221, 217, 256, 224 and 237. Once in match play he fell to the 32nd seeded player Travis Franz of Waterford Township 688-684 in the three-game match to fall into the loser’s bracket in the double elimination format. Once in the loser’s bracket he beat Michael Calhoun of Wyandotte 683-544, Christopher Simonson of Howell 723-549, Richard Wayne of Westland 689-633 and Brian Hatcher of Roseville 657-604. Ewald won the Masters in 2006.

 

Others still alive in the competition include Kerry Kreft of Warren , Kurt Pilon of Warren , Paul Koehler of Roseville and Mason Brantley of Detroit with no losses in the winner’s bracket.

 

Kreft qualified seventh with 1,283 and won matches against Angelo Newby of Waterford Township 591-527, Christopher Simonson 619-574 and Harold Sullins of Chesterfield 693-593.

 

Pilon qualified eighth with 1,268 and beat Donald McClain of Allen Park 644-589, defending champion Jeffrey Austreng of Waterford Township 684-644 and Travis Franz of Waterford Township 736-462 to remain undefeated.

 

Koehler qualified 20th with 1,226. He defeated Edward Campbell of Rochester 562-471, Terence Haines of Garden City 680-671 and Brian Hatcher 684-677 to remain in the winner’s bracket.

 

Brantley qualified 30th with 1,186. He made a big move in the last three games of qualifying with games of 204, 258 and 254 to barely make the top 32 by eight pins. In match play he remained undefeated with wins over Jeffrey Roche of Dearborn 638-603, Andrew Watts II of Belleville 597-475 and Jason Battishill of Waterford Township 644-542.

 

Besides Ewald the loser’s bracket include Terence Haines, Harold Sullins and Travis Franz.

 

Defending champion Jeffrey Austreng won his first match before losing the next two. He cashed for $275.

 

Other Oakland County cashers include Angelo Newby for $350, Jason Battishill $350, James Fedorka of Madison Heights $300, Robert Chamberlain Jr. of Holly $275, Travis Raskey of South Lyon $275, Mitch Jabczenski of Novi $250, Edward Campbell $250, Anthony Dadeppo of Troy $250, Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon $110 and Jeffrey Suma Sr. of Auburn Hills $110.

 

The 138-player field averaged 186.2, with the top 32 finalists averaging 206.7 on lane conditions, which produced a high game of 268 by Terence Haines. The event was run under the tight Sport Bowling specifications from the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).

 

The final rounds of match play begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Cloverlanes.
