NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

 

Ken Kossick of Commerce Township won his first National Senior Bowling Association title with a 227-182 triumph over Larry Walker of Garden City at Colonial Lanes in Ann Arbor .

 

Kossick qualified 14th and proceeded to beat John Ross Jr. of Vassar 179-173, Bob Edwards of Lima , Ohio 269-266 and Ed DeBlock of Canada 227-172 en route to the championship match. He took home the top prize of $1,000.

 

Walker qualified eighth and defeated Steve Hubble of Westland 227-215, Dave Tulak of Taylor 277-225 and Gary Schwarze of Sterling Heights 213-183 on his way to the finals. Walker collected $500 for his efforts.

 

Jim Burton of Novi had the top game with 289 and Tulak was the top qualifier.

 

Other Oakland County seniors who cashed were Burton for $140, Dave Eatmon of Ferndale for $100 and Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township $100.

 

The next NSBA event will be July 12 at Troy Lanes in Troy .

USBC YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

The attention of the youth bowling world will be focused on the Detroit area in July when five major youth events will take place.

 

From July 5-11 the USBC Junior Gold Championships will take place at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights , Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights and Century Bowl in Waterford Township .

 

Practice will take place at all three centers on July 5-6 with qualifying slated for July 7-9. Competition will begin at 8 a.m. each day and last until 11 p.m. on three shifts. Admission is free to watch the finest youth bowlers in the world, right here in our backyard.

 

After 18 games of qualifying (six each day) the field of 1,728 will be cut to the top 105 male and 57 female bowlers for the semi-final round to be contested at Sunnybrook Lanes on July 10. The finals will take place at Sunnybrook Lanes on July 11 where the champions will be crowned.

 

From July 7-10 the Bowling This Month Adult/Youth Tournament will be held at Taylor Lanes in Taylor . Squads are 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The cost is $30 per team. The format is four games scratch Baker style with scholarships awarded to the youth bowlers of the top teams. To enter the youth must be a USBC Youth member and the adult must be a USBC member. Beginning July 7 and continuing through July 15 the USBC Youth Open Championships will be contested at Skore Lanes in Taylor . Similar to the USBC Open and USBC Women’s Championships this event is open to all USBC Youth members competing in team, doubles and singles.

 

The Pepsi Championships will have 200 state representatives at Sunnybrook Lanes from July 14-16. These were qualifiers from their respective states.

 

Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights will host the $100,000 North Pointe Insurance Group High School Singles Championship Tournament from July 12-14.

 

As you can see there are several scholarship and competitive opportunities for youth bowlers in the next month.
