Haines of Garden City won the inaugural Metro Detroit USBC Association Classic
Tournament at Kingswood Lanes in
Haines was the top qualifier with an eight-game total of 2,013, an average of 251. In match play he won seven of 10 matches and averaged 247 for a total of 4,695 including 210 bonus pins to pace the competition.
Going into the final position round match Ewald trailed Haines by 66 pins, which meant Ewald had to win the final position round game by 37 pins for the championship. Haines prevailed 214-211 to seal the title.
The format used was the original PBA format from the early days of the PBA before television created the stepladder finals. The winner was determined by the total of qualifying score, match play score and bonus pins for winning a match in the round robin match play. Winners in the round robin match play earned an extra 30 pins for each win. The top 10 players in qualifying advanced to match play.
During match play Haines bowled consecutive games of 236, 280 and 300 for an 816 series. He took home the top prize of $1,000.
Ewald received the runner-up check of $600 after qualifying second with 1,984. In match play he also won seven of 10 matches averaging 240, but finished second with a grand total score of 4,597. During qualifying Ewald had an 813 series on games of 279, 279 and 255.

The scoring pace for the field was quite high with the qualifying field averaging 226 and the match play finalists averaging 228 during match play.
Norris also recorded a 300 game and two 800 series of 858 and 826.
