GAVIE RESULTS

 

 The 72nd Annual John Gavie Memorial Tournament started the new 2008-09 season at Thunderbowl Lanes with 108 team competing.

 

The winner of the Open Division was the Detroit ’s Finest team with an actual score of 3,572. The team was led by Duane Henderson of Detroit with 764, followed by Jeremy Thomas of Detroit 730, Carleton Chambers of Taylor 723, Gerald Johnson of Taylor 692 and Amos Mathis of Detroit 663. Michael Thorn of Eastpointe captained by second place It’s A Business team with a score of 3,473 followed by Eastridge Insurance / Roto-Grip, captained by Harry Sullins of Chesterfield , with 3,461.

 

The Ladies Division was won by X Em Out with a handicap score of 3,547. The members of the team were Detroiters Erin Williams (760), Virginia Austin (706), Sonja Butler (685), Rowena Flonoury (654) and Joann Carter (510). The second place team The Ladies with 3,386 was captained by Fay Watts of Belleville .

 

The Harbor Lanes #1 team captured the Senior Division crown with a handicap score of 3,274. Jim Robbins of Warren led the team with 629. Others were John Bosco of St. Clair Shores 622, Rick Grange of Clinton Township 598, Lloyd McNabb of Warren 594 and Mike Belans of St. Clair Shores 516. Second and third place respectively were won by NSBA 1, captained by Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield and Sunnybrook Lanes captained by Dick Krupa of Sterling Heights .

 

The only perfect game was bowled by Joe Labak of Northville.

 

“The tournament was my Uncle John’s legacy and we would be very proud that the 72nd run was so well received by so many bowlers.” said Frank Gavie. “We also contributed over $1,000 to a scholarship tournament held a couple of days ago which we hope will grow in the future as well.”

 

A good time was had by all as the bowling season officially has begun.
