MDUSBC SENIOR MASTERS

The Metro Detroit USBC Association Senior Masters Tournament qualifying is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at Classic Lanes in Rochester Hills.

Qualifying will be conducted in two squads on Feb. 7. After the six games of qualifying is completed the top 31 players plus defending champion Jim Burton of Novi will return for double elimination match play on Sunday, Feb. 8. The top eight players after the first day of match play will come back on Saturday, Feb. 14 to complete the competition. Matches consist of two games total pins.

First place will pay $3,000 with $1,500 for runner-up.

The star studded field includes Ed Austreng of Waterford Township (Senior Masters champion 2005), Dick Beattie of Dearborn (Masters 1974, 1980 & 1981), John Bennett of Clarkston (Masters 1977 & Senior Masters 2004), Roy Biggs of Canton (2006 Senior Masters), Anthony Dadeppo of Troy (Masters 1995), Doug Evans of Clinton Township (Masters 1998 and 1990 and 2000 Senior Masters), Ken Kossick of Commerce Township (Masters 1997 and 2002), Fred McClain of Allen Park (Masters 1978 and Senior Masters 2003), Lee Snow of Wixom (Senior Masters 2007) Harley Trumbull Jr. of New Boston (Senior Masters 1996 and 2002) and David Tulak of Taylor (Masters 1988).

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

William Manley Jr. of Detroit won his first National Senior Bowling Association title with a 226-196 triumph over Rick Vittone of Canada at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.

Manley qualified third and proceeded to beat Ralph Jennings of Detroit 258-197, Bob Edwards of Lima, Ohio 196-170 and Rick Goyeau of Canada 269-188 en route to the championship match. Manley took home the top prize of $1,000.

Vittone qualified eighth and need great efforts in each of his matches on the way to the finals. He beat Larry Franz of Redford 241-236, Jim Magolan of Shelby Township 238-237 and Ken Lang of Eastpointe 280-247. Vittone earned $500 for his efforts.

Bill Stewart of Plainwell was the top qualifier. Goyeau, Joe Buffa of Macomb Township and Ernie Segura Sr. of Southgate each had a 300 game during competition.

The only Oakland County cashers were Philip Horowitz of West Bloomfield for $125 and Mike McCleskey of Southfied for $100.

BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

Randy Warnken of Clinton Township won his second Budweiser Michigan Majors title with a 224-203 victory over Tom Smallwood of Saginaw at Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights.

Warnken qualified third for the stepladder finals with a nine-game total of 2,181. He then proceeded to beat Nick Wissinger of Utica 233-210 and Brian Newcomb of Romulus 236-203 for the right to face the top-seeded Smallwood.

In the earlier stepladder match Wissinger dispatched Rory Kalanquin of Davison 222-215.

Warnken took home $1,300, Smallwood $700, Newcomb $600, Wissinger $500 and Kalanquin $400.

Oakland County cashers included Mike Chism of Farmington Hills for $300, Kerry Kreft of Hazel Park $220 and Mark Milasinovich of Oxford $125.

The next MMBA event will be Feb. 21 at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights. Warnken will defend his previous title at Sterling Lanes.

NEWSWORTHY TIDBIT

John Weber, 82, of Clarkston accomplished a rare feat recently when he shot 151 triplicates in two out of three week of competition in the Sunday Elks League at 300 Bowl in Waterford Township.

Congratulations John you are the model of consistency.
