MICHIGAN STATE SENIOR MASTERS

 

Mitchell Jabczenski Sr. of Novi won the inaugural Michigan State Senior Masters at Airport Lanes in Jackson Sunday when he defeated Mike Motrinc of Harrison Township 415-394 and 457-455 in the two-game total pins matches to win the $2,000 first prize and the title. Motrinc settled for the second place check of $1,000.

 

Jabczenski qualified ninth with a six-game total of 1,257. In match play he defeated Charlie Tapp of Portage 440-404 and Terry Hockstad of Utica 424-397 before losing to Ray Johnson of Battle Creek 411-396. Once in the lower bracket he beat Richard Eiermann of Garden City 416-364, Larry Walker of Garden City 509-373, Jerry Boobyer of Jackson 457-418, avenged his earlier defeat against Ray Johnson 426-418 and John Bennett of Clarkston 380-365 to reach the finals.

 

He also won a paid entry into the USBC Senior Masters.

 

 “This title is very special because it is a once a year event.” said the 56-year-old Jabczenski. “I’ve had a lot of seconds in my career.”

 

“This was a great tournament. It took a lot of hard work and some luck.” he said.

 

Motrinc qualified 27th with 1,185. He remained undefeated with triumphs over Victor Portalatin of Jackson 407-388, Robert Carpenter Sr. of Saginaw 442-376, Thomas Morgan III of Wyoming 373-370, Jerry Boobyer 461-434 and John Bennett 405-382 to advance to the finals before falling to Jabczenski.

 

Bennett qualified 28th with 1,183. In match play he had victories over John Masiello of Lincoln Park 451-448, Doug Evans of Clinton Township 416-376, Larry Walker of Garden City 439-416, Ray Johnson 390-351 before falling to Mike Motrinc 405-382. Once in the loser’s bracket he fell to Jabczenski 380-365. He took home $700.

 

Johnson qualified 32nd with 1.178. In match play he beat top qualifier Eugene Bowhall of Brighton 390-365, David Maiorana Sr. of Rochester Hills 387-382, Mitchell Jabczenski Sr. 411-396 before losing to John Bennett 390-351. In the loser’s bracket he beat Terry Hockstad 384-382 before falling to Jabczenski 426-418. He earned $500.

 

Top qualifier Bowhall led qualifying by 28 pins with 1,401 and had the top game of the tournament with 283 in qualifying. He lost his first two matches 390-365 to Ray Johnson and 448-398 to Rick Vittone of Tecumseh , Ontario . Bowhall took home $150.

 

Other Oakland County seniors who cashed were Larry Martinez of Waterford Township for $225, Ed Austreng of Waterford Township $200, David Maiorana Sr. of Rochester Hills $200, Dwayne Griggs of Orion $175, Jerry Owczarski of South Lyon $150 and Ernest Jones of White Lake $150.

 

The field of 90 bowlers averaged 191.6 during the six games of qualifying.

 

The top 32 qualifiers averaged 206.3 during qualifying and 202.3 in match play.

 

The Michigan State USBC Senior Masters Tournament is a USBC certified event operated by the Michigan State USBC Association.
