MDUSBC SUPER SENIOR MASTERS

 

Leonard Cianciolo of Warren won the MDUSBC Super Senior Masters title and the top prize of $1,000 at Universal Lanes in Warren with a 248-165 triumph over Edward Flowers of West Bloomfield. Flowers settled for $500.

 

Cianciolo qualified third with a five-game total of 1,154. He remained in the winner’s bracket with victories over Thomas McKay of Shelby Township 203-136, Donald Clifford of Clinton Township 236-232, Flowers 213-208 and John Bennett of Clarkston 213-183 awaiting a challenger from the loser’s bracket. Flowers emerged from the loser’s bracket, but was no match for Cianciolo. Cianciolo averaged 226.7 for 10 games of competition.

 

Flowers qualified 15th with 1,062 and beat Ed Deblock of Canada 235-192 and Harley Trumbull Jr. of New Boston 278-172 before falling to Cianciolo the first time 213-208. In the loser’s bracket he beat Kenneth Kossick of Commerce Township 248-201, Clifford 216-202 and Bennett 224-212 to advance to the championship match against Cianciolo. Flowers averaged 219.7 for 12 games.

 

Bennett finished third for $400 and Clifford fourth for $300.

 

Bennett qualified fourth with 1,124 and averaged 220.7 for 10 games of competition. In match play he remained in the winner’s bracket by defeating Nick Cipiti of Clinton Township 235-193, defending champion Doug Evans of Southgate 207-184, Fred McClain of Allen Park 246-221 before losing to Cianciolo 213-183 and Flowers 224-212 to end his run.

 

Clifford qualified 11th with 1,073 and averaged 218 for 11 tournament games. In match play he beat Larry Martinez of Waterford Township 237-204 before losing to Cianciolo 236-232. In the loser’s bracket he beat Jim Sherlock of Allen Park 216-201, Trumbull 224-217, McClain 214-203 before getting knocked out of the competition with the loss to Flowers 216-202. 

 

Kenneth Kossick led the field of 73 with a five-game total of 1,195. Richard Grange of Clinton Township had the top game during qualifying with 289 and Edwin Austreng of Waterford Township the top game in match play with 290.

 

Robert Arnold of Clinton Township won the special competition to non-qualifiers over the age of 70 with a 212-183 win over John Staricha of Highland . Arnold took home $175 and Staricha $150 for their efforts.

 

Other Oakland County seniors who cashed were Ken Kossick of Commerce Township for $250, Ed Austreng of Waterford Township $175, Larry Martinez of Waterford Township $150, Ken O’Brien of Troy $150 and Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township $125.

The MDUSBC Super Senior Masters Tournament is an USBC certified event operated by the Metro Detroit USBC Association, the largest local association of the United States Bowling Congress with more than 70,000 adult and youth members.
