BUDWEISER MICHIGAN MAJORS

Dale Hofmeister of Essexville won the Budweiser Michigan Majors tournament at Sterling Lanes in Sterling Heights with a 297-204 triumph over top seed Mason Brantley of Detroit .

With his win Hofmeister ties all-time MMBA wins leader Dick Beattie with 15 titles. He qualified second for the stepladder finals and beat Mike Calhoun of Wyandotte 257-227 to advance to the championship match. He took home the top prize of $1,000.

Brantley had a great day with three 300 games during the nine games of qualifying and semi-finals for a nine-game total of 2,294, an average of nearly 255. Brantley settled for the runner-up check of $600.

“I didn’t think I had a chance the way Mason finished the semi-final with those 300 games.” said Hofmeister. “It just feels great to tie someone like Beattie.”

Earlier in the stepladder finals Terry Haines of Dearborn Heights beat Craig Nidiffer of Trenton 237-188 before falling to Calhoun 220-179.

Calhoun took home $500, Haines $400 and Nidiffer $300.

Troy Stus of South Lyon was the top Oakland County casher for $210. The only other local was Mike Busch of Waterford Township who took home $125.

The next MMBA event will be Match Game Championship, March 20-21 at Parkway Lanes in Trenton .

NATIONAL SENIOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION

Over 80 senior bowlers descended on Bowl One Lanes in Troy and when the competition was complete Ross Beers of Saginaw beat Dave Forfitt of Canada 268-258 to claim the National Senior Bowling Association title.

Beers was the top qualifier and beat Larry Walker of Garden City 278-237, Rick Schultz of Warren 279-193 and Rod Harling of Oak Park 234-228 to advance to the championship match. Beers earned the top prize of $1,000.

Forfitt qualified 11^th and earned his place in the finals by virtue of wins over Tom DeBacker of Chelsea 186-185, John Ross Jr. of Vassar 285-193, Rick Vittone of Canada 223-200 and Steve Sears of Michigan Center 224-213. He settled for $500.

Harling was the top Oakland County senior cashing for $250. Other locals cashing were Phil Horowitz of West Bloomfield for $115, Bill Haynes of Rochester Hills $100, Joe Fitzsimmons of Waterford Township $100 and Larry Martinez of Waterford Township $70.
